September 20, 2009 - News Johnny Depp is 'shocked and very sad' about Dick Cook's departure
From latimesblog.com: "Johnny Depp, star of Walt Disney Co.'s hugely successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, said he was "shocked and very sad" to hear about the abrupt departure of studio chief Dick Cook, whom he called "the sweetest man on the planet and such a gent." Depp, who said his enthusiasm for a fourth "Pirates" movie has waned with the news of Cook's exit, said "it seems like the whole town is shocked," Depp said in a phone interview from London. He said Cook called him a few hours ago to break the news. "He is the utmost gentleman, so he made the call himself. He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it,'" Depp said. "He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason." The move has shaken things up in Hollywood, and could even see the dissolution of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here is the official statement from both Walt Disney Chairman Richard Cook and Walt Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger: STATEMENT FROM RICHARD W. COOK, CHAIRMAN, THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS I am stepping down from my role as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective immediately. I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney...from the beginning as a ride operator on Disneyland's steam train and monorail to my position as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. To wrap up my Disney experience in a neatly bundled statement is close to impossible. But what I will say is, during my time at the Studio, we have achieved many industry and Company milestones. Our talent roster is simply the best in the business. I believe our slate of upcoming motion pictures is the best in our history. From Flickdirect.com: "On Friday, September 11th, 2009, Johnny Depp sailed onstage atop the Black Pearl pirate ship in Anaheim, California at Disney's D23 Expo to help announce the forthcoming installment of Disney's blockbuster film franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Captain Jack Sparrow sets sail in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" -- slated for the summer of 2011. No plot details announced yet however the last film left us with the idea that Sparrow and Barbosa would go looking for the fountain of youth." Any thoughts on this one people?

From the Insider.com: "Orlando Bloom is joining co-star Keira Knightley in quitting Pirates of the Caribbean, according to Contact Music. The fourth installment to the Pirates franchise is said to be in the planning, however, last year Knightley announced she won’t do another Pirates movie. A source revealed to the News of the World: “Orlando loved the films but thinks it’s time to bow out because they tied up nicely for his character Will Turner. The producers are OK with that because they want to concentrate on the new adventures of Johnny Depp’s (character) Captain Jack Sparrow.” The next Pirates movie should be interesting. Watch it turn out to be the best one!"
