October 7, 2009 - News Surprised author Tim Powers finds himself setting sail with 'Pirates of the Caribbean'
From Latimesblog: "Last month, Johnny Depp walked on stage at the Anaheim Convention Center in his Jack Sparrow costume and delighted a surprised audience of Disney fans with his rummy buccaneer's trademark mutter. Within an hour, in San Bernadino, an award-winning fantasy author named Tim Powers found a flurry of emails from surprised friends and fans filling his inbox. The reason for the e-mail barrage: Depp's theatrical appearance at Disney's D23 Expo included the announcement that the fourth Sparrow film will be entitled "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which echoes the name of a 1987 fantasy novel by Powers about pirates and the Fountain of Youth. Everyone wanted to know if Powers had hit the Hollywood jackpot -- or if he needed to be in touch with his attorney. Powers was in a tricky spot -- he wanted to publicly celebrate a career windfall but the folks at Disney had made it clear that he was supposed to keep everything under wraps. He was more surprised than anyone that the title had been trumpeted at Disney's new promotional convention. "I was still -- as far as I understood -- not free to talk about it," the author told me Monday. "Then about a week ago my agent wrote and said, 'You're now able to say that in fact Disney did option the book.' That happened a while ago, it'll be three years in April.[...] Powers is intrigued to see how Hollywood will bend his historical fantasy to its needs. In the original form, "On Stranger Tides" was the tale of "Jack Shandy" Chandagnac, who is the son of a British puppeteer who gave up the family marionette tradition after his father died destitute. He sets sail for Jamaica to find the nefarious uncle who stole his father's rightful inheritance but en route he is captured by pirates who practice sorcery -- they give him the choice of joining their ranks or execution. Soon he reluctantly falls into service to Blackbeard, who is on a quest to locate the Fountain of Youth" Click on the picture for more details about this story. "

October 5, 2009 - News Disney Looking to Replace Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean 5"
From Worstpreviews.com: "When Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook was fired, Johnny Depp revealed to LA Times that his excitement for "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" has disappeared since Cook was the reason why he signed on for the franchise to begin with. Even though Depp may be considering abandoning the fourth film, his only way out of the contract is to claim that the script is terrible. He will likely not do that and will hold up his part of the deal. However, don't expect Depp to be in the fifth and sixth installments. According to a CinemaBlend source, Disney is already prepping to replace Depp in the last two parts of the new trilogy. The studio is not looking to hire a new actor to play Captain Jack Sparrow; the goal is to completely replace him with an entirely new character. So the big question is: Will you watch a "Pirates of the Caribbean" film without Johnny Depp?"
![]() September 30, 2009 - News Depp Departure Rumors 'Unfounded'
From sfgate.com: "Movie bosses have blasted reports that Johnny Depp is set to abandon ship - he isn't quitting the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. The actor sparked speculation he'll be replaced in his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future installments after telling the Los Angeles Times his enthusiasm for the movies had declined following the departure of Disney chairman Dick Cook, who recruited the star for the films. He said, "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm (for the project) at the moment. It was all born in that office." But a spokesperson for Disney insists Depp has not backed out of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, branding the rumors "completely unfounded."
![]() September 24, 2009 - News Geoffrey Rush confirmed for Pirates Of The Caribbean 4
From Denofgeek.com: "Captain Barbossa will return with Captain Jack Sparrow, as another part of Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides slots into place. A week or two back, Disney confirmed the title for the fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides, and last week we had stories that the departure of Disney head honcho Dick Cook has slightly tempered Johnny Depp's enthusiasm for the project. That said, if Johnny Depp doesn't end up headlining Pirates 4, then we shall subject ourselves to a High School Musical movie marathon. Today, anyway, there's happier news, with Geoffrey Rush confirming that he's returning as Captain Barbossa in the film. Talking to MTV, Rush - who wasn't aware of the movie's title! - revealed that he'd been asked to block off some time for the shoot, and that he's expecting to be before the cameras next Spring. He also said, "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience. That they're not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn't be so good." Given the complex nature of the production for the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, you would expect that the announcement of who will be directing On Stranger Tides can't be too far behind. Rob Marshall, of Chicago fame, was the last name to be linked with the job, but that was a good month or two now. We'd quite like to see what Neill Blomkamp would do with it... Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is scheduled for the summer of 2011."
